Since a lot of the history here is focused around the Viking Age, I wanted to learn as much as I can about what they were really like. (Thank God the Erslands let me borrow their car for all of these trips, I don't know what I would do without them!) So anyway, I figured it would be good to see more of their architecture other than just the stave churches so I decided to go to a castle that built in the Viking Age. I found this place called the Akershus Fortress which was built in 1299. It was used as a seat for kings and was used as the center of government back then. It is now considered a national symbol from the medieval period. The Akershus Fortress was supposedly used as a prison during WW2 when the Germans took over the castle. And if it didn't look interesting from the outside-the inside is even better! I wonder if they have any secret passageways in the castle. That would be too cool!
